Manager - Safety & Emergency Response

Job Purpose
The safety manager is responsible for providing guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of the organization’s safety management system (SMS). Regarding safety matters, the safety manager has direct access to the Accountable Executive and appropriate senior and middle management. NATURE AND SCOPE The safety manager must interact with operational personnel, senior managers and departmental heads throughout the organization. The safety manager should also foster positive relationships with regulatory authorities, agencies and service providers outside the organization. Other contacts will be established at a working level as appropriate.
Key Result Responsibilities
• Demonstrates excellent safety behavior and attitude, follows regulatory practices and rules, recognizes and reports hazards, and promotes effective safety reporting.
• Models and promotes an organizational culture that fosters safety practices through effective leadership.
• Acts as an information conduit to bring safety issues to the attention of management and to deliver safety information to the organization's staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Provides and articulates information regarding safety issues within the organization.
• Assists in the continuous improvement of the hazard identification and safety risk assessment schemes and the organization’s SMS.
• Builds and maintains an excellent working relationship with the organization
Key Result Responsibilities - Continued
Safety Action Groups (SAG) and within the Safety Services Office (SSO).
• Represents the organization on government, international organizations, and industry committees (e.g., IATA, CAA, etc.)
• Analyzes technical data related to hazards, events, and occurrences for trends. Process management • Effectively utilizes applicable processes and procedures to complete roles and responsibilities.
• Investigates opportunities to increase process efficiency.
• Measures the effectiveness and seeks to continually improve the quality of processes.
Responsibilities :
(a)The position requires the ability to cope with changing circumstances and situations with little supervision.
The safety manager acts independently of other managers within the organization.
(b) The safety manager is responsible for providing information and advice to senior management and the Accountable Executive on matters relating to safe operations. Tact, diplomacy, and a high degree of integrity are prerequisites.
(c) The job requires flexibility as assignments may be undertaken with little or no notice and outside normal work hours.
Qualifications (Academic, training, languages)
- Bachelor's degree in Aviation/Engineering/Management or equivalent; alternatively, a diploma or certificate in the related field from a recognized university or institute combined with needed experience and exposure.
- Must have Safety/ Quality management system experience ( 5 years or more)
- Must have proven operational experience in the relevant area (5 years or more)
- Completion of recognized courses in Safety Management Systems and Safety Risk Management.
- Training certificates in SMS and Human Factors from a recognized safety training institute.
- Skilled report writing is required to ensure that complex reports are properly and clearly described.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Fluent in English.
Work Experience
- 10 years of experience in the Aviation/Airlines industry, 8 years of which in Safety in a supervisory capacity.
- A sound knowledge of Safety Measures and procedures adopted in Aviation.
- Has extensive knowledge and exposure to Civil Aviation Authorities; familiar with rules and regulations of ECAA about Safety, policies, procedures, manuals, etc.
- Experienced in leading teams with heavy workload schedules and ad-hoc scenarios.
- Very good knowledge and exposure to airline and Flight Operations formalities and standard regulations; good understanding of the operations staff’s thought process.
- A balanced personality, composed, capable of dealing with threats and emergencies with focus, analytical thinking, efficiency, and commitment to successful, safe results.
- Very good knowledge and working exposure to Safety Audit/Quality Assurance practices.
- Demonstrates high accuracy and attention to both results and details.
- Ability to express ideas and concepts clearly.
- Possesses effective problem solving and decision making skills.
